DEFTERA VILLAGE , CYPRUS

Deftera is a village of the Nicosia district. The population of village amounts roughly in the 5.000 residents, included and a refugee settlement. It is situated about 13 km southwest of the capital Nicosia (Lefkosia).

The houses are built in independent plots parcels and maintain big gardens with grass flowers and trees. The current houses are bigger than old and have central heating, air conditioning and a lot of other comforts. They are constituted by a lot of rooms and enough are luxury. Enough city people buy plots and build houses in the region of Deftera , because they prefer they live in the countryside away from the noise of city.

The community is managed by the Community council that is constituted by the chairman (head of village) the vice-president and his advisers. The Community council is elected every five years and its aim is to face the problems of village and to make the life of residents better.

Deftera is crossed by the river Pedieos, so the ground is a very fertile because it was created by eluviations of the river. The bigger extent of the village is cultivable ground. Are cultivated almost all the species of fruit trees, olives, cereals and vegetables.
Deftera is producing excellent agricultural products such colliantre, roket, spinach, parsley, celery etc. for this it is known as the vegetable garden of Nicosia.

Just outside Deftera is the famous cave – church of Mother Mary of the Golden Cave. There was found the golden picture of Virgin Mary that keeps the baby Jesus in the centre of her body. This picture is one from the pictures that painted the Evangelist Loukas and it is priceless.

The miraculous picture attracts thousands faithful pilgrims each year on 15th of August that celebrates the Virgin Mary, from all Cyprus. There it becomes one from bigger celebrations of the island that lasts roughly ten days.

 
   
 
   

DEFTERA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The school is situated in Deftera village, a community of 4 000 persons 13Km southwest of Nicosia.

Our school was founded 130 years ago, in 1874 and it is one of the oldest schools in Cyprus. Originally it was built in a different area of the village. The building hosting the school now was built about 30 years ago and it is situated in the centre of the village, next to S. Georges church.

The school has about 300 students divided in 12 classes, two for each grade. It occupies 16 teachers as a permanent stuff and 4 visiting teachers. The head teacher of the school is for the year 2004 -2005 Mrs Maria Palechorou.

There are twelve teaching classrooms, two offices, and two workshops. There is also a big hall for celebrations.

Since the year 2004 the school is participating in the Eco – Schools project and has earned the green flag of an environment friendly school.

We are hoping, through projects like Comenius 1, to improve the relations of our students with students from other European countries and create a common identity based on respect of each others culture and traditions.
